About Judes Crow

Judes CrowJudes  has a long association with the sea. As a coastguard in 1873, her great great grandfather rescued the crew & cargo from a schooner off the Lizard.
The sea has always been an important part of her world and she has lived most of her life within reach of the south coast.

Her painting and ceramic work link her into this marine world where she creates a fictional reality often creating a sense of the surreal.
Currently, Judes is drawn to the rich geological, ever-changing coastal sites of the Isle of Wight. She is inspired by the impact of weather, tide, erosion and human activity. She likes to create drawings and paintings on the beach releasing a more child-like energy and take these ideas back to the studio.

"My work has been influenced by my experience of studying art therapy in 1991. Through painting I can depict experiences which are ‘hard to put into words’. It is also a good way of cutting through ‘tangled verbosity’. As a result I draw on my own secret mythology and often create poetry and stories in images. Painting also gives the adult me ‘permission’ to play and to explore the different inner and outer worlds that merge and re-emerge in my daily life.”

Judes is currently working collaboratively with three other artists, Annik Cullinane, Mary Flynn and Gerry Price. The four artists form the group Rostrum 4. They are currently making joint site visits; collaboration and authorship are central themes. In order to show the evolving group dynamic, part of their exhibition in 2010 is dedicated to diaries, sketch books, record sheets, audio recordings & photography.

This exhibition is at Quay Arts in the Michael West Gallery, Newport, Isle of Wight June 5th to June 26th 2010.
